WE BELIEVE IN CHANGE

Cape Town – Land redistribution, a moratorium on farm evictions, a ban on pesticides, and social protection are among the demands made by more than 200 women farmworkers, dwellers, and other precarious workers from across the country.

The group marched to Parliament on Friday to hand over a memorandum to Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) Minister Thoko Didiza.

The women marched from Hanover Street in the city, singing empowering songs as they made their way to Parliament with placards in hand reading “the land shall be shared among those who work it”; “municipality there is no land for evictions” and “Esta don’t stop evictions”.

“We provide this country with food but we can’t afford to feed our own families,” said Joanne Johannes.

Women on Farms Project (WFP) said while the Extension of Security of Tenure Act 62 of 1997 (Esta) was meant to provide protection from evictions, it did not, as many farmers were not abiding by the law and getting away with it.

WFP spokesperson Kara Mackay said: “Farm dwellers are getting evicted and being made homeless.
